YouTube is bullish on its strategy for India, one of the fastest rising economies. As India is home to a huge number of smartphone users, there is a big demand for Video services platforms like YouTube. Low cost 4G data plans are giving it a bigger thrust. The size of the opportunity has prompted platforms and service providers to go big on their India plans.
YouTube had recently announced YouTube Premium monthly subscription of Rs 129 in India, while YouTube Music Premium was brought in at Rs 99 per month. As a next step to entice the young user base, YouTube has brought in a student discount program. Special plans have been introduced to cut down the cost by almost 40%. The price of YouTube Premium is Rs 59 now, and YouTube Music Premium now costs Rs 79 per month.
It is important to note that these discounts are limited to students pursuing higher education from all recognized universities, colleges and other educational institutions. To avail, the student needs to sign up for the membership, and then get their ID verified.
The discount plan should push Youtube’s efforts in establishing a dominant position in the Indian market, which is potentially the most attractive territory in their scheme. They may though face stiff competition from their local rivals, who are introducing similar discount plans for Indian students. The battle is truly on, and the discounts could be one of the many steps expected from all players.
