Xiaomi Redmi Go Review: Affordable and perfect device for first time smartphone buyers

Xiaomi recently launched its first Android Go smartphone, called as Redmi Go in India. This is a low budget entry level smartphone, priced at Rs. 4,499 with two color options- Blue and Black. The Redmi Go is a compact device which can easily fit in your jeans pocket. The smartphone is exclusively available on Flipkart and Xiaomi official stores.

Redmi Go Design and Display:

The Redmi Go has a compact form factor, and can easily fit in your hand and pocket. The device has a good build quality with a durable plastic body. The smartphone has pretty thick bezels which is acceptable at this price point. The buttons and SIM-tray placement is good, which is easily accessible from one hand.

The Redmi Go features a 5-inch HD display with 720 pixels screen resolution, which is good in this price range. It has a great viewing angles and good color reproduction both in indoor and outdoor lighting conditions, but you need to adjust the brightness level manually.

Redmi Go Software and Performance:

The Redmi Go is powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 425 processor. It comes with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage, which is expandable up to 128GB via microSD card. The smartphone runs Android Go 8.1 Oreo, which is a lighter version of Android for low range smartphones. The device packs in some preloaded apps like Mint browser, Mi community, Amazon and others, some of which can be uninstalled. The Redmi Go also has Google Go applications like YouTube Go, Gmail Go and others.

During our review period, we found that the device can easily handle casual gaming like Temple Run and Subway Surfers without any lag. However, it takes some time to open app, app switching and multi-tasking, which was frustrating for some time. The Redmi Go is not for PUBG lovers, so if you want to play PUBG than choose another device.

Redmi Go Camera:

The Xiaomi Redmi Go has an 8MP rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, and a 5MP front camera with f/2.2 aperture. Both the sensors perform well in day-light condition with fair amount of details and decent colors. Though in low light, camera perform below average with noise and less amount of details, which is acceptable in this price range.

Redmi Go Battery and Connectivity:

The Redmi Go is backed by 3000mAh battery which easily last for one day with heavy usage. The device comes with Accelerometer, Proximity, Gyroscope sensors. Connectivity features include 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Micro-USB and 3.5mm audio jack.

Final Words:

Overall Redmi Go is a good smartphone for the first-time buyers, or you can use it as a secondary phone. This device is expected to get stiff competition from Asus Zenfone Lite L1 and Infinix Smart 2, which also offer good specifications at a similar price.
