MediaTek Helio P70 versus Qualcomm Snapdragon 660

The smartphone market is seeing the most intense battle in the mid-range segment. It seems to have caused the leading Taiwanese chip maker MediaTek to focus on this segment too. So, they have brought out Helio P70 as an upgrade over the existing Helio P60 with pretty impressive results. But can MediaTek P70 score better than the other major chip player and their direct competitor Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 660? Let’s find out in our detailed comparison between MediaTek Helio P70 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 660.

Helio P70 vs Snapdragon 660

Helio P70 is an octa-core SoC powered on 12nm FinFET technology, and a dedicated multi-core AI Processing Unit. It has four 2.1 GHz Arm Cortex-A73 performance cores, and four 2.0GHz power-efficient Arm Cortex-A53 cores. MediaTek claims that an improved Arm Mali-G72 MP3 GPU contributes to a 13 percent improvement in graphics performance. The company adds an upgraded CPU performance and power efficiency to the main achievements.

On the other hand, Snapdragon 660 brings in custom Kryo 260 CPU cores, fabricated on a 14nm process. The cores are paired with the Adreno 512 GPU. The core cluster has four 2.2 GHz Cortex-A73 ‘performance’ cores, and four 1.7 GHz Cortex-A53 ‘efficiency’ cores. Qualcomm claims that these cores result in a performance 20% higher than its predecessor. Better GPU, and enhanced power efficiency make it one of the most powerful mid-range processors in company’s 600-series.

Benchmark Tests

The benchmarks are broad level indicators of how either of the processor would perform at an overall level. The real-world performance may however differ across devices.

We tested both the chipsets through Realme U1 and Realme 2 Pro phones on Antutu, Geekbench for multi-core and single-core, and GFX T-Rex Graphics Score.

  •  Antutu Benchmark:

On the Antutu 7 test, Snapdragon 660’s score is 140000 on Realme 2 pro. But Helio P70 turns out to be better with a score of 145021 on Realme U1.

  • GeekBench Score:

On Geekbench’s multi-core benchmark test, the Helio P70 based Realme U1 scores better with a score of 1580-6602, as compared to Snapdragon 660 based Realme 2 Pro’s score of 1452 – 5511 on Realme 2 pro.

On Geekbench’s single core benchmark test, the P70 based Realme U1 scores better with a score of 1254.

  • GFX T-Rex Graphics Score:

The Snapdragon 660 scores better here with 39 frames per second as compared to MediaTek P70 with 35fps.

Camera

Helio P70 comes with triple image signal processor returns. It can support up to a 24MP + 16MP dual camera array, and a 32MP sensor for single camera. A high-resolution depth engine, AI facial detection, real-time HDR capture, and a faster shooting mode add to its setup.

The Snapdragon 660 can support up to a 25-megapixel camera, or two 16-megapixel cameras. These are aided by Qualcomm Clear Sight and Spectra 160 ISP chip to give more light and less noise, a faster autofocus, accurate color reproduction and zero shutter lag.

Our tests hint at a better image quality delivered by P70 based Realme U1. The device also gives a better color reproduction in normal & indoor light conditions.

Artificial Intelligence

Helio P70 has a dedicated multi-core Artificial Intelligence Processing Unit. It is useful for capabilities like object identification, facial recognition, pose detection, and automatic scene recognition. The MediaTek NeuroPilot enhances its performance to deliver more AI processing efficiency.

On the other hand, Snapdragon 660 packs Neural Processing Engine (NPE) software framework and Artificial Intelligence Engine (AIE) for finding and assigning the right component such as CPU, DSP, or the GPU for AI-related tasks.

The Verdict…

Both Helio P70 and Snapdragon 660 are very close in terms of performance. Snapdragon 660 gives a better GPU performance thanks to the better GPU. However, Helio P70 outperforms Snapdragon 660 in case of CPU performance benchmarks. On the graphics front, the Adreno 512 GPU helps Snapdragon 660 takes a slight lead. Snapdragon 660 has better modems, dedicated hardware encryption module, better DAC. On the other hand, Helio P70 wins the benchmarks. The clocking speed gives the Helio P70 the much-needed advantage.

At an overall level, the benchmark scores show that both are almost at par except for marginal differences. And both can be trusted to be perfectly suitable for reasonable mid-range segment smartphones.
